The Walrus Magazine and Amazon Canada have

teamed up again for their annual First Novel Award.

Since 1976 a year this Canadian literary award has been given to aspiring youth and adult authors.

If you believe you have what it takes to become a novel writer, you can now sumbit your story in one of the featured categories below.

The 2021 Amazon Canada First Novel Award Contest

Amazon Canada is giving away the following Prizes:

One Grand Prize winner (of the Adult Novel Category) will receive $60,000.

SIX Adult Travel Prizes: a cheque worth $6,000 CAD for each of the Six Adult Novel Finalists, and will be invited to attend the Award Ceremony. The Adult Travel Prize includes:

  • R/T airfare for two to Toronto
  • and one night hotel accommodation for two.

THREE Youth Travel Prizes: a cheque worth $3,000 CAD for each of the Three Youth Short Story Finalists, and will be invited to attend the Award Ceremony.

The Youth Travel Prize includes:

  • R/T airfare for the Youth Short Story Finalist and one parent or legal guardian from a major airport closest to the Youth Short Story Finalist’s place of residence to Toronto;
  • and one night hotel accommodation for two.

The winner in Youth Short Story Category will receive $5,000 and a mentorship lunch with editors of The Walrus.

The two Finalists not selected as the Youth Short Story Winner will receive a cheque worth $500 CAD each.

The 2021 Amazon Canada First Novel Award Contest is now ongoing until January 31, 2021.

Six Adult Novels Category Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges from the novels submitted, based on the literary qualities. The finalist having received the highest review will be the winner of the Adult Novel Category.

Three Youth Short Story Category Finalist will be selected by a panel of judges, based on the literary qualities. The finalist having received the highest review will be the winner of the Youth Short Story Category.

The 2021 Amazon Canada First Novel Award Contest is open to Canadian residents.

For the Adult Novel Category, you must have reached the age of majority in your province of residence; and have never had a novel of which you published (whether professionally or self—published) prior to the publication of the submitted novel, anywhere in the world.

For the Youth Short Story Category, you must be 13 years and up to 17 years of age to participate.

To participate in the 2021 Amazon Canada First Novel Award Contest

  2. choose from one of these two categories: Adult Novel Category (Professional book publishers may submit novels for the Competition) OR Youth Short Story Category (write a short story under 3,000 words)
  3. Click submit
  4. then Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your entry.
